Foo Fighters frontman and ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl says the one thing people don't understand about Nirvana was how much fun it was.
For years after Kurt Cobain's death, Grohl passed on questions about Nirvana for understandable reasons; it was emotionally exhausting to talk about, people always asked the same questions or he was supposed to be promoting the Foo Fighters.
But in recent years, after decades of history with Foo Fighters, Grohl has been more keen on fielding Nirvana questions. He's gone back and forth with fans of the band, and gotten an idea of their perspective of Nirvana. In a new interview with GQ, Grohl offered a much different picture of what Nirvana was like.
"It wasn't always a bummer," Grohl said. "There were times when it was so outrageously hilarious and fun. Kurt had an amazing sense of humor and Krist Novoselic, if you've ever spent time with him, is one of the funniest people you've ever met.
Grohl went on to describe daily life in Nirvana.
"It's kind of like living in a loud, distorted version of Monty Python. And so when it gets dark, it gets f***ing dark (laughs). But when it's not, it's f***ing hilarious."
Grohl says most people imagine Nirvana was just bleak and grim all the time.
"It just wasn't," he insists. "There were times that were really great."
